Since HIV/AIDS was first recognized in the 1980’s, many things have changed.

The fight against this epidemic is just as important today. More and more communities are infected and affected by this disease. Because of advances in treatment, individuals are living longer, but the combination of aging and AIDS is exacerbating their health in ways not even anticipated. Homelessness, substance abuse and mental health issues have all had an impact on the spread of the AIDS epidemic.

Anyone can get HIV and AIDS

There is no cure for AIDS

You cannot get HIV from hugging, sharing utensils, or mosquitoes

HIV can be transmitted by having unprotected sex

Abstinence is the best protection

Sharing needles can get you infected

One in every four people becoming infected today is a teenager

African Americans comprise almost half of Florida’s AIDS cases

HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death for African American men 35-44 years old

HIV can be passed from a pregnant mother to her child

Anyone can be tested for HIV confidentially or anonymously

Approximately 40,000 new infections occur every year in the United States

It is estimated that ¼ of the U.S. residents living with HIV don’t know it
